12,501 of these rifles were manufactured for the Union during the Civil War, but none are known to have been issued. It has the standard sights and lock markings including "1863" on the tail of the lock, and the barrel is marked with "1863" partially stamped over "US/V/P" in addition to the usual "V/P/eagle head" proof and inspection marks. The left side of the butt has "S.P.T.L.," and the buttplate tang is marked ".8." in addition to the "US" marking. A spare nipple is in the patch box.
