Desirable U.S. Contract Ainsworth Sub-Inspected Colt Cavalry Model Single Action Army Revolver Serial Number 803

Manufactured in the first year of production, 1873, and inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector Orville W. Ainsworth (OWA). It subsequently was refurbished by Colt in the mid-1890's. This revolver has the desirable early production features which include the "script" barrel address with slanted crosses at either end of the marking, "1871/1872", "two-date/two-line" patent marking on the left side of the frame, small "U.S." property mark on the left side of the frame, small cylinder bolt stops, early ejector housing with barrel boss and small "A" (Ainsworth) sub-inspection mark visible on the trigger guard, back strap and in two locations on the side of the cylinder. The lower left side of the one-piece walnut grip is stamped with the script initials "OWA" surrounded by a rectangle. "P" proof marks are stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the frame on the side of the cylinder. The serial number, "803" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, the trigger guard, the factory replacement back strap in smaller numbers as typical of factory overhaul, side of the cylinder, underside of the barrel beneath the ejector housing and underside of the barrel ahead of the frame and behind the "P" proof mark. An "H" factory sub-inspector mark is on the rear face of cylinder. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "2623". The revolver has the early "bullseye" style ejector rod and replacement cavalry style hammer with bordered elongated knurling on the spur. The barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap have a high polish blue finish. The frame, loading gate and hammer are color casehardened. The one-piece walnut grip is oil-finished. Documented Ainsworth sub-inspected Cavalry Single Action revolvers between serial number 266 and 882 were issued to the 1st, 5th, 6th and 8th Cavalry regiments. Nearly all of the Ainsworth sub-inspected Cavalry Single Actions saw frontier service and were subsequently overhauled as this example.

ConditionFine as factory refurbished. The revolver retains 50% of the factory refurbished high polish blue and 40% color casehardened finish. The muzzle and upper portions of the barrel show moderate handling wear with scattered minor scratches. Much of the blue finish is contained in protected areas. The Colt legend on the top of the barrel is sharp. The serial number located under the ejector housing is sharp; the serial number in front of the frame and "P" proof are less distinct. Polishing marks are present on protected areas of the trigger guard and back strap; contact points have a brown patina. The cylinder has a silver gray patina with traces of blue in the flutes and some patches of shallow pitting. One of the "A" inspection marks is deep and crisp while the other "A" and "P" proof mark are less distinct. The frame, loading gate and hammer have about 60% of the faded case colors intact with some silvering on contact points and a few scattered spots of age discoloration. The sides of the factory reoiled walnut grip are very good with a barely legible "OWA" inspection mark. The revolver has been used as a hammer and the grip butt and bottom of the back strap have numerous shallow dents. The action is tight but the hammer will not hold at half cock. The high polish blue finish and marking variations may indicate that this revolver was returned to Colt for refinish or repair, however it appears to have all of the original components. Very few of the early production Ainsworth sub-inspected U.S. contract Single Actions survived in the original "Cavalry" configuration. This is a good looking example of one of the very first U.S. contract Colt Single Action Army revolvers.
