Exceptional Civil War Remington New Model Army Percussion Revolver

Manufactured in 1864 for the union forces during the Civil War. The top of the barrel is marked "PATENTED SEPT. 14.1858/REMINGTON & SONS. ILION.NEWYORK. U.S.A /NEW MODEL". The matching serial number is marked on the underside of the barrel, the lower left side of the frame under the grip and written in pencil on the inside of each grip panel. There is a single letter "D" inspectors mark on the left rear barrel flat and on the trigger guard, "C" on the left front of the frame and on the loading lever, "R" on the cylinder,, upper right front of the frame and right rear barrel flat "W" on the left rear of the frame, a "P" on the rear cylinder face and an "S" on the underside of the barrel. Blue finish with niter blue trigger, casehardened hammer and brass trigger guard. Fitted with smooth two piece walnut grips with a sharp Ordnance inspector's script initials "RH" in a rectangle on the left panel and a "D" on the bottom of each panel. The Remington New Model Army Revolver was the primary handgun issued to Federal cavalry regiments during the last two years of the Civil War. These rugged revolvers remained in service with the regular cavalry regiments on the frontier until they were replaced with the Model 1873 Colt Cavalry revolvers circa 1875.

ConditionExcellent. The revolver retains 95% plus original bright high polish blue finish with some thinning on the loading lever, and grip straps and some minor high point wear. There is a very small area of very minor oxidation on the left side barrel flat. There is a drag line on the cylinder, as well as some minor scratches and dings. The trigger guard has a very pleasant aged patina. Almost all of the original bright niter blue remains on the trigger and the hammer retains almost all of the somewhat faded original case colors. The grips are also excellent with only a few minor dings and handling marks. All markings (including the grips) are sharp and clear. The action is excellent. A super nice example of a Civil War Era Remington New Model Army revolver.
