Description:

The guard is inscribed "Presented To Liut. L. Pomeroy by the Membs/of Lyons Lodge No. 93 A F & AM Spt. 24/1862." The Lyons Lodge of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons is located in Lyons, Iowa. 2nd Lieutenant Lucien Pomeroy, age 26, born in Pennsylvania, served in Company K of the 26th Iowa Volunteer Infantry which was mustered in on September 30, 1862. He resigned on January 11, 1864 (coincidentally the same day the 13th Amendment ending slavery was proposed). Company K was drawn from men in Lyons and nearby towns. The 26th fought at Fort Hindman, Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Jonesboro, and in Sherman's "March to the Sea." The gilt finished hilt also has floral patterns and "US." The grip is ray skin with golden wire wrap. The blade has patriotic etching and no visible maker's marks. The scabbard has gilt brass fittings.

Rating Definition:

Fine with original gold finish remaining in the recesses, aged patina on the brass, some flaking on the grip, distinct etching, some light pitting and minor edge wear on the very fine blade, and mild oxidation on the scabbard.
