The makers have kindly confirmed that this hammergun was completed in 1877 for a George Sheffield as No.1 of a pair. The gun originally had 30 1/2 inch cylinder bore barrels, a 14 3/8 inch stock and weight of 5 lbs. 8 1/2 oz. Browned twist barrels with concave rib with brass bead front sight, signed "J. PURDEY & SONS. 314 1/2. OXFORD STREET. LONDON.", numbered "1" and engraved with a spray of scrollwork at the breech end. Casehardened action with carved percussion fences and blued top lever engraved "PATENT". Casehardened rebounding side locks each signed "J. PURDEY & SONS" and casehardened trigger plate with sprung front trigger. Blued border and scroll engraved trigger guard. Well figured 13 3/4 inch stock with checkered butt, grip and forearm, the underside of the butt inset with a vacant silver escutcheon. Best quality bouquet and scroll engraving throughout. Weight: 5 lbs. 1 oz., London nitro reproof marks, 2 1/2 inch chambers, cylinder bore in each tube, barrel dimensions: right proved at 19, measuring .634, minimum wall thickness 23; left proved at 19, measuring .634, minimum wall thickness 25. In a Holland & Holland lined and fitted leather case, the lid with numerous labels including the original Holland & Holland trade label, with some accessories including a cleaning rod and cleaning heads.

Fine. The barrels have been shortened. They retain 60% browned finish, mostly original, with some handling and age related storage wear. Action, locks and trigger plate each retain some original casehardened finish, especially strong in sheltered areas. Top lever retains 90% original blued finish. Trigger guard has been period reblued. Engraving remains clear throughout, slightly softened on the trigger guard. Stock has numerous bruises, scratches and marks throughout, checkering remains clear. Mechanically excellent. Case in fair condition.
