Description:

This is a very rare example of a SCOTTI Model X semi-automatic rifle that was reportedly produced circa 1933. This rifle was originally designed by Alfredo Scotti in the early 1930s (circa 1932) that used a form of the delayed blow-back design. It has a straight-pull bolt action design with a gas piston added below the barrel. It used standard Carcano clips and was chambered in the 6.5mm Carcano cartridge. This designed was also used on the original Hispano-Suiza HS.404, however, with a completely redesigned bolt. There were approximately 250 total manufactured with limited success as they did see some very limited field use, but were not formally adopted by the Italian military. These are fairly rare today and sought after by early semi-automatic rifle collectors. The Model X action used a delayed blow-back, open bolt design which means you cock the rifle by pulling the cocking handle reward that locks the bolt to the rear, upon pulling the trigger, the bolt moves forward, picking up a cartridge, chambering it, firing it by means of a fixed firing pin. The rifle actually has a small gas port and gas cylinder located under the front area of the barrel with an operating rod attached to a lug on the underside of the bolt body. The rifle uses a round non-rotating body with a rotating bolt head. The locking lugs on the bolt head and corresponding locking lugs in the receiver are both angled that helped keep the bolt closed during firing so that until the bullet passed the gas port which in turn pushed the op-rod and bolt reward and allows the bolt head to rotate and unlock driving the complete bolt assembly reward under residual bore pressure. These rifles used a standard Steyr enbloc designed clip that was pushed down through the top of the action and after the last round was fired the clip just fell out of the bottom of the action. It is fitted with the standard blade front sight and tangent rear sight very similar to the Italian Carcano rifles. It is fitted with a walnut stock and new made replacement handguard. The top of the barrel knox form is marked "TERNI" and on the right side "1933 XI", indicating manufacture in 1933. The top of the receiver ring is marked "SCOTTI/MOD X" with the right side marked "Armi Atatiche Scotti-Brescia". The left side of the buttstock is stamped with "30". Although the receiver is not numbered we believe the number on the side of the buttstock to be the actual serial number of the rifle.

Rating Definition:

Fine condition with 40% of the original blue finish overall with just even honest wear and blue loss on the exposed metal parts with the markings and proofs clear and sharp. The stock is also in fine condition with its nice original oil finish showing numerous small pressure dents and dings. A solid representative example of a rare early Italian semi-automatic SCOTTI Model X rifle. Mechanically fine.
