Description:

The Model 1795 is historically significant as the first official standardized U.S. martial arm and the first firearms manufactured at the U.S. armories. They were based on the French Model 1766 widely used during the Revolution and were the main infantry arms of the War of 1812. This musket has the correct Type I markings and features for the 1799-1802 period and is dated "1800" on the buttplate tang. It has a deep tombstone shaped condemnation mark above the vent and appears to be in original flintlock configuration. The condemnation mark suggests it was deemed unsuitable for alteration to percussion (thus confirming that it is an original flintlock!). Note the distinctive curls on the frizzen toe and top jaw guide used on the Type I muskets. "IF" is marked on the trigger plate. The barrel has the standard proof and inspection marks including "US" on top. Provenance: Jonathan Peck collection.

Rating Definition:

Very good with mottled gray patina, light pitting throughout, heavier pitting at the breech, and moderate overall wear. There is space between the front band and barrel, and the sling swivels are absent. The stock is fair and has a dark oiled finish overall, a crack extending 4 3/4 inches forward from the front lock screw, some small chips and slivers absent, and general mild dings and scrapes throughout. Mechanically fine. Pre-War of 1812 Model 1795 muskets are particularly hard to find, especially in original flintlock configuration.
