Description:

This is an early "Type III" musket (1808-1814) dated "1808" at the tail of the lock and buttplate tang. It has the standard markings and features. Pre-War of 1812 Model 1795s are always desirable, and examples in original flintlock configuration in fine condition are even more sought out. Around 45,000-50,000 of these Type III muskets were manufactured. The Model 1795 was the first official U.S. manufactured infantry weapon. This model was based on the French Model 1766 muskets heavily imported and used in the American Revolution, and the Model 1795 became the main U.S. weapon four our second fight against Great Britain and their Native American allies in the War of 1812. Both U.S. victories in the wars substantially boosted American nationalism and helped unify the country. Provenance: Jonathan Peck Collection.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with mottled gray and brown patina, mild pitting, and mild marks on the iron; plugged vent, and chipping/cracking at the toe and edges of the stock. Mechanically fine.
