Description:

The Model 1840 was the last flintlock musket manufactured by the Springfield Armory, and 26,841 of the 30,421 were converted to percussion between in 1849-1851. Additional Model 1840 muskets were converted after 1851, marking original flintlock examples incredibly scarce. "4" is marked on the backside of the pan, the back side pin screw, and several other internal and external lock components, the bottom of the frizzen has an "H," and several other single digit and letter markings appear on various parts. It has standard markings and features throughout, including "1842" on the lock and barrel and an "AH" (Asabel Hubbard) cartouche on the left flat. "N H" is also stamped on the left barrel flat suggesting it was sent to the State of New Hampshire.

Rating Definition:

Fine with a blend of light pitting, artificial light brown patina, and patches of dark brown along most of the iron and a lighter mottled gray patina on the lock. The brass pan has a dark aged patina, and there is strong niter blue on several of the lock components. Some areas show signs of cleaning. The revarnished stock is very good and has a faint hairline tension crack at the rear lock screw. The markings throughout are distinct, and it is mechanically fine. This is an attractive example of the last U.S. martial flintlock muskets.
