Description:

Manufactured in circa 1875. The browned damascus swamped octagonal barrel signed "H. BARELLA KÖNIGL: HOF. BÜCHSENM. IN MAGDEBERG" in silver, engraved with a band of foliage at the breech and with bead front sight and blued rear sight of one fixed and one folding leaf. The box lock action engraved with scrollwork formed of oak leaves and depicting a differing game scene on each side, that on the right of a boar in a rocky landscape, that on the left with two running hounds. The upper tang with small gilt escutcheon engraved with a crowned monogram and with stud cocking indicator. Short rotary underlever with spherical horn handle, double set triggers and trigger guard engraved with a huntsman with a scrolled horn finger rest behind. Figured 14 inch half stock with raised cheekpiece, checkered grip panels, schnabel forearm, and steel butt plate and patch box with hinged cover engraved en suite with the action, the patch box cover engraved with three stags in a woodland landscape. Two wide iron sling mounts.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Barrel retaining nearly all its rebrowned finish, minor corrosion spotting visible beneath the finish. Action discolored throughout, engraving remains clear. Slight wear to the gilding on the escutcheon. The mounts are more heavily discolored with some corrosion marking, engraving remains clear. Stock with scattered marks and bruises, checkering clear. Mechanically excellent.
