Description:

This is a fine example of a mid-WWII Japanese Type 99 sniper rifle that was manufactured at the Toriimatsu factory under Nagoya Arsenal and has been fitted with an original, rare late war Japanese Type 1 externally adjustable 4x sniper scope. The rifle has the standard Type 99 adjustable tangent rear sight with the peep sight without the folding anti-aircraft wings. It is graduated from 3-15 (300-1500 meters) with the inverted "v" front sight with guards. The chrysanthemum on top of the receiver ring is distinct; however, it has been lightly struck three times across the face of the mum. The Japanese Kanji markings for Type 99 are still present. The rear receiver ring has the Nagoya Arsenal stamp over serial number (4526). It has a numbered matching front barrel bands with an unnumbered lower barrel band without any provisions for the folding monopod. It has a matching bolt, cocking knob and firing pin, with a renumbered (now matching) dust cover. It has the mid-war style stock with finger grooves on the side, with no drain hole in front of the trigger guard, side mounted sling swivels and a cupped steel buttplate. The rifle is fitted with an original WWII, sniper scope base on the receiver that is attached with three new locking screws and taper pins, and the edge of the stock has been correctly remachined for the base. The base is fitted with a very desirable late war, non-matching Japanese 4x internally adjustable scope that is marked on front portion of the tube: "4X7 (degrees)/Japanese manufacturer's markings/No. 17492". The lower left side of the scope base also carries a series of Japanese kana markings. The rear locking plate is unnumbered; however, the base is stamped with assembly number "399". The scope has the grid pattern cross-hair that is calibrated 4-14 (400-1400 meters) elevation below the center line with 20 degrees wind deflection on either side. The scope is fitted with a reproduction rubber eyecup and comes with an original cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 60% of the blued wartime finish overall with blue loss on the edges and high spots, barrel bands and trigger guard bow. The revarnished stock and handguard has been lightly sanded/rubbed out on the buttstock area and has now been darkened slightly. The finger grooves are still sharp along the edges. Mechanically fine. The scope and mount have most of its repainted black painted finish over pitting overall, and it has clear optics with a well-defined reticle.
