Description:

This is a very fine example of a very late WWII Savage Arms No. 4 MKI (T) sniper rifle that is fitted with a No. 32 MKII scope, and mount and includes the scope metal can. These Savage Arms snipers were produced from 1942 through late 1945. Almost all (except the first few hundred) were held in stores and never issued by the British Army. Instead, the British Army almost always used the standard Enfield No. 4 MK I rifle produced by BSA Shirley that was converted by Holland and Holland into the sniper rifle configuration. This was very unfortunate as the Savage Arms No. 4 MKI rifles were actually very accurate rifles that proved their worth throughout WWII. The left side of the buttsocket is marked with the late serial number range of "15C4790" over the large squared off "S" marking for the Savage Arms Company and "1942" for the year these rifles were adopted for production. It has a black wartime finish with a walnut buttstock, forend and handguards. The comb of the stock is fitted with a oak/walnut cheekpiece held on with two wood screws. It has the standard blade front sight with a "No 7" marked rear sight. The grip area of the buttstock has the correct Savage Arms Company boxed "S" proof over the British acceptance proofs with the correct "S51" stamping behind the pistol grip area indicating conversion by H&H. The top of the wrist is blank indicating it was never issued or fitted with a sniper scope. The underside of the forend is stamped with "JC/N22" indicating it was manufactured by "Curtis & Sons" over a partial single British broad arrow proofmark. It is currently comes with a No. 32 MKII sniper scope that is marked "TEL. SIG/No.32 Mk.II/No.14542/O.S. 1650A", and it has the standard post and cross-hair reticle pattern and is fitted in an original rough cast scope mount that is stamped "JC" followed by "A6601". The top and bottom half of the scope rings are stamped "720" and "721" respectively. The scope comes with an original green metal storage case that has a small paper label inside that matches this scope and mount, along with a scope adjustment tool and a set of British proofed leather lens caps. It has a matching bolt assembly and the bolt head is stamped with a "2". This sniper rifle is complete with one original 10-round box magazine.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% of its wartime arsenal black paint finish with edge and high spot wear with some thinning on the receiver area. The stock , forend and handguards are all in very fine condition with a mostly matching color on all the pieces showing only minor handling marks on the sides of the buttstock. The scope and mount retains 95% of its shiny black arsenal refurbished finish overall with only minor wear on the very ends of the scope. The markings are clear and distinct, and the optics are excellent.
