Description:

This is an example of a late Series II "P" Code commercial contract Luger. These pistols exhibit the Krieghoff blue finish with the straw colored small parts and fitted with the black checkered plastic Mauser type grips. It is estimated that only 100 total were ever manufactured in their own serial number range of P1 to P100. This specific pistol is stamped on the left side of the barrel extension with "P1a" with the "1" overstamped over another single number and the letter "a" slightly behind the number. This additional letter "a" indicates that the original number was altered or a rejected part. Later on in this series it is common to find a "circled letter A". The frame is also stamped with the same matching serial number "P1 a". These models are easily identified since they don't have an German Luftwaffe acceptance proofs, instead they had a horizontal "Eagle/N" commercial proof on the side of the frame, barrel extension and top of the breechblock. They are fitted with the early C-5 type toggle marking that consists of the "H/Dagger/K" factory marking over "KRIEGHOFF/SUHL. The barrel itself is unnumbered and only carries a single "Eagle/2" Luftwaffe proof, probably indicating it was a left over military contract barrel used for commercial production. It is numbered like a commercial contract Luger with the serial number "P1a" on the front of the frame and left side of the barrel extension with no other serial numbers on any of the various parts except the mismatched side plate which is number "70". It is fitted with a blued, all milled, type three magazine with an unmarked aluminum base with the center retention pin. It is complete with a replacement WWI brown leather holster that is marked on the inside of the flap with an illegible maker's mark over "BERLIN 1918".

Rating Definition:

Very fine condition with 90% of the blued finish overall with edge and high spot wear with thinning on the grip straps and blue loss on the side plate hump, muzzle area and front frame rails. The smaller parts retain 60% of their straw colored parts with the ejector a dark refinish. The holster is in good condition with visible markings with the outside of the holster having been dyed brown and polished.
