Description:

This is an very fine original example of a late WWII German high turret sniper rifle manufactured by Mauser in 1944. It is fitted with a correct Ajacks sniper scope. The turret mounted rifles were one of the best WWII German sniper rifles and were in service from 1939 to the end of 1945. The top of the receiver ring is covered by the front turret, but it is probably marked "byf/44" and the breech end of the barrel is marked "44E35". The left side of the receiver has a single "eagle" firing proof/serial number next to a single "Eagle/135" Waffenamt proof. The receiver sidewall is marked "Mod. 98" in block letters. The left rear of the barrel is marked with a Nazi firing proof followed by the serial number. The rifle is fitted with the late war stamped trigger guard, floor plate and barrel bands. It has the standard blued bolt that has a milled, low scope, safety lever. The rifle is fitted with a WWII sniper scope with matching numbered front ring (40639). The elevation dial base is marked "AJACKS 4X90" on the left side it is serial numbered 48227 on the right side (these were numbered separately). The elevation range dial is properly marked 1-8 (100-800 meters). The rifle has the standard inverted "v" front sight and a tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 meters. The rifle is fitted with a laminated stock and handguard with a stamped cupped buttplate with a checkered face. The right side of the buttstock and underside of the buttstock both have a faint eagle proofmark. It is complete with a sheet metal front sight cover, a steel cleaning rod, a cross-hatched brown leather sling, and a K98 bayonet and scabbard.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine with 85% plus of the original blue finish overall with high spot wear and blue loss on the trigger guard, and floor plate. The scope retains 75% plus of its blued finish overall with blue loss on both ends of the scope with areas of gray/brown spotting mixed with some light rust spots starting on top and on the lower right side of the scope body. The optics are clear and the reticle is intact. The stock and handguard are both in very fine condition with a nice light brown color overall, showing light handling marks and pressure dents on the sides in some areas, with a faint stock proof on the side and underside. Mechanically excellent. A solid original example of a WWII 98K Sniper Rifle!
