Description:

Colt referred to this model as the "New Model Pistol" and collectors popularly know it as the Root after Elisha King Root, Colt's factory superintendent and later president. This model was designed by Samuel Colt and the basic design was also used on the New Model or Model 1855 revolving rifles and shotguns. This revolver was manufactured in 1865 and has the "L" by the serial number on the butt that designated it for shipment to London. It has London proofmarks on the left side of the barrel and in the cylinder flutes along with the patent date in one flute. The serial number places it within the Model 6 range, but it has the fluted cylinder of the earlier Model 5. It otherwise has the standard markings and features. It comes in a hardwood case with English fitted interior, Colt directions sheet on the inside of the lid including information on this model, green baize lining, Eley Bros. cap tin marked "Made expressly for/COLT'S PT/Belt and Pocket/PISTOLS.," James Dixon & Sons "COLTS POCKET FLASK," L-shaped screwdriver, bullet mold, bore rod, key, and mix of ball and conical bullets.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with 50% plus original blue finish, 40% original case colors on the hammer spur and loading lever, gray and brown patina on the balance, some patches of minor pitting and oxidation, mild handling wear on the grip, slight chips at the heel of the otherwise fine grip, and minor scratches overall. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with mostly intact original interior label, mild storage wear and slight separation on the case partition. The scarce Colt marked flash is excellent overall. The balance of the accessories are very good. This is a very attractive cased set built around a rare London shipped Model 1855 revolver.
