Description:

This is a rare example of an exceptional U.S. Model 1903 cutaway rifle that was produced by Remington Arms Company. These early rifles were used by armorers and company officials to visually show all the various internal functions and mating surfaces of the various parts. These early cutaway rifles were usually manufactured using out of tolerance parts and/or early parts used in the set up of the various manufacturing machines. They all lacked most of the standard markings and inspection proofs just like this example. They are fairly scarce as not more than 20-30 were ever produced with most being destroyed at the end of the production or given away as gifts after the war. This excellent example has 13 different cutaway areas, with most of them on the left side. They all show the internal mating/functional areas of the rifle. As noted, this scarce example has no factory markings of proofmarks except for a single circled "P" proof on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard and "RA/flaming bomb/3-42" on the barrel. Some of the cutaway areas on this rifle are the chamber, internal areas of the magazine, the sear/striker rod engagement surfaces, the receiver recoil lug/stock area and the locking lugs on the bolt. It has the original early combination Remington dark green parkerized and blued finishes on the various parts. It is fitted with a second pattern, two bolt "S" style stock and handguard. It has all the correct milled components. A similar example is pictured on pages 121, 122, and 123 of "An Illustrated Guide to The '03 Springfield Service Rifle" by Canfield.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. 98% plus original parkerized finish remains with small handling marks throughout and traces of light edge wear. The wood is also excellent with a barely noticeable hairline crack visible behind the upper tang, and another on the left side of the stock near the magazine cutoff. Mechanically excellent. One will look a long time to find another example!
