Description:

This musket is a French Model 1766 "Charleville" pattern musket of the type used by many soldiers in the Continental Army and rebel militia during the American Revolution. This pattern is sometimes referred to as a variation of the Model 1763 rather than a distinct model and appears in some American sources as "Light Model 1763s." However, the bore at the muzzle gauges around .75 rather than .69 suggesting it has been bored out (possibly one of the thicker Model 1763 barrels rebored). It has a bayonet stud on the bottom of the barrel near the muzzle, blade front sight on the rear of the upper barrel band, "71"stamped on the barrel near the breech (modern collection type marking), "I-H" on the side plate, "H" on the buttplate and trigger guard tang, no legible markings on the lock, "MA" carved into the right side of the butt, and what appears to be an incompletely carved "F" followed by another "A" on the left side of the butt.

Rating Definition:

Fair with mostly refurbished brown blended with brown patina and spots of minor oxidation along most of the iron, tool marks on the barrel, moderate pitting concentrated mostly on the lock and breech, the noted lack of visible markings on the lock, smooth re-oiled finish on the stock, some chips and stable cracks, and minor dents and scrapes. It is mostly mechanically fine, but the half cock notch is not fully secure. The frizzen shows deep wear from extensive firing that would be expected on a Revolutionary War used musket.
