Description:

Manufactured in 1863. The barrel has the one-line New York address on top, the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side, and the cylinder has the roll engraved naval battle scene with the 1850 patent date. Single letter inspector marks ("D" and "H") are found throughout. Both sides of the grip have clear script letter cartouches: "JSD" for John S. Duston on the left side and "JT" for John Taylor on the right side. Matching numbers are found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, wedge and arbor pin. The Model 1860 was the main handgun of the Union Army during the Civil War and is one of Colt's best percussion revolvers. It improved upon the larger Dragoon and Walker revolvers by using improved steel which allowed a .44 caliber cylinder to be fitted to a more streamlined frame and barrel. Samuel Colt himself proclaimed it "the best pistol by all odds I have ever made for military purposes."

Rating Definition:

Excellent retaining 90% plus original blue finish with the balance bright and on one spot of patina on left side of forward portion of barrel. 85% plus vivid original case colors. All of the cylinder scene remains. The grip is excellent with a tiny chip missing near the bottom (left side), some handling evidence and crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. No Civil War collection is complete without a U.S. inspected Model 1860. Do not miss your opportunity to acquire a superb example of one of the most popular revolvers amongst Union officers and cavalry!
