Description:

This is a solid example of a late Civil War contract Ball Carbine. Ordered by the U.S. government in 1864, only 1,002 of these carbines were manufactured by Lamson & Co. of Windsor, Vermont. Delivery of the carbines was in May, 1865 after fighting had stopped; however, these carbines are still generally considered Civil War weapons by collectors. The left side of the receiver is marked "E.G. LAMSON & CO./WINDSOR. VT./U.S./BALLS PATENT./ JUNE.23.1863/MAR. 15, 1864." It is equipped with a fixed front and two leaf folding rear sights, cleaning rod on the right side of the forearm and saddle ring and bar on the left side of the receiver. Smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a steel crescent buttplate and no visible cartouche. Due to very limited numbers being produced, the Ball carbine is a key piece in any comprehensive Civil War or U.S. Cavalry small arms collection.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. All metal surfaces have a smooth brown patina with mottling on the receiver. The wood is very good with scattered small blemishes in the varnish from moisture or a solvent and some minor dents and scratches. The receiver markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
