It's estimated that just under 14,500 Merrill carbines were manufactured in two variations (this example being the second type) during the Civil War. Merrill carbines were issued to units from New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Delaware, as well as many being captured by Southern forces.
