Description:

These carbines were designed by Major General Ambrose Burnside, who is most famously known for is questionable leadership at Fredericksburg, Antietam, and Petersburg. He had sold his shares in the Bristol Firearms Co./Burnside Rifle Co. before it received the large government contracts for these carbines, leading to very little personal profit from his invention. Approximately 43,000 of these carbines were manufactured circa 1863-1865, and this example shows the standard markings and features, including an illegible cartouche on the left of the stock.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus, retains 25% original blue finish and traces of original case colors with the balance a smooth brown/grey patina. A few of the markings have become partially illegible. The re-oiled wood has numerous minor dings, divots, and scratches consistent with use, and a visible cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
