Scarce Civil War Era Joslyn Army Model Percussion Revolver

This is one of the rarest of the revolvers used by the Union Army and Navy. 100 were purchased by the U.S. Navy and delivered in October 1861, and 1,100 were purchased on the open market and primarily issued to Ohio units including the 5th and 6th Ohio Cavalry. Small numbers are known to have been issued to other Midwest units. Only about 3,000 Army Model revolvers were manufactured in 1861 and 1862 by the Joslyn Firearms Company in Stonington, Connecticut. Of these, 2,500 were this standardized model. It has a German silver blade front sight, a sighting groove in the top of the frame for a rear sight, "B.F. JOSLYN/PATD. MAY 4TH, 1858." on the barrel at the breech, "90" on the loading lever, bottom of the barrel, cylinder pin, grip frame, and cylinder, and ratchet, an illegible marking in pencil (probably "90") on the underside of the right grip, and "H.W. BUTLER (written over what appears to be 90)/from G.C. Curtis" on the underside of the left grip.

ConditionVery good plus with patches of original blue finish (25%), mainly brown patina on the balance, some mild oxidation, general minor marks and scratches, mild overall wear, some hammering marks and a small hole on the butt, and fairly crisp checkering on the fine grips. Mechanically fine.
