Description:

The Model 1836 pistols were the last of the U.S. martial flintlock pistols and are the product of decades of refinement and as such are the pinnacle of U.S. flintlock pistols. They trace their lineage back to the French Model 1777 which was used as the basis for the first U.S. martial pistols manufactured by Simeon North at the turn of the century. The grip profile and shape of the cock with its heart shaped piercing remain very similar to that historic model, but the rest of the pistol shows a variety of improvements including the use of a swivel mounted ramrod and securing the barrel to the stock by a barrel band. This Model 1836 flintlock pistol was manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut, in 1844 at the tail end of production and has the standard markings and features. A significant number of these late Model 1836s were converted to the percussion system making high condition original flintlock examples highly desirable.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with light gray patina and faint pitting, mostly crisp markings (including deep cartouches on the left flat), and a few minor nicks in scratches in the wood. Mechanically excellent.
