Description:

This is an outstanding example of a martially marked Civil War U.S. Remington Split Breech Type I Carbine. The barrel is equipped with pinched blade front and folding leaf rear sights with the left side at the breech having a small letter "B" inspector initial. Most of the components have inspector single letter markings. The casehardened frame has a saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side with the upper tang stamped "REMINGTON'S ILION, N.Y./PAT. DEC. 23, 1863 MAY 3 & NOV 16, 1864". The barrel, single barrel band, split breechblock and hammer are blue. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock fitted with a casehardened buttplate. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with clear "PB" and "CGC" script cartouches. This is the same inspector as the Henry Rifle!

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The carbine retains 97% original blue finish showing some minor thinning. The receiver retains 90% plus original case colors. The wood is excellent with raised feathered grain, a barely noticeable sliver of wood missing from the forearm and a gouge on the left forearm along with dings and dents overall. The cartouches are crisp. The carbine is in excellent mechanical condition; however, the firing pin has been removed from the face of the hammer. This is the finest example of this model of Remington we have ever offered at auction.
