Description:

These New Model 1859 rifles were manufactured from 1859 to 1862, and were most famously issued to the green clad 1st and 2nd Regiments of Sharpshooters. It shows the standard markings and features of a New Model 1859 Navy pattern rifle, including a bayonet lug for a sword bayonet. There are no visible cartouches, and it has the hand-carved initials "J.B" in the left of the buttstock. Per Sellers in "Sharps Firearms," "The serial numbers of" the sharpshooter rifles "range from 36,000 to 57,000 and there were two major varieties: those with the bayonet lug under the barrel were usually affixed with the double set triggers; while those which were equipped for socket bayonet had a single trigger." Note that some of those with single triggers and sword bayonets may have been sent to the Sharpshooters; however, most of these would have been part of the 2,780 rifles ordered for the U.S. Navy.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Flashes of original case colors remain on the inside of the patch box door with the balance nearly all a mottled dark gray patina overall. The refinished wood has numerous minor dents, dings, and scratches consistent with heavy use. Mechanically excellent.
