U.S. Sharps New Model 1863 Metallic Cartridge Conversion Carbine

This is one of 60,000 New Model 1863 carbines manufactured for use during the Civil War and one of 27,000 Sharps carbines relined to .50 caliber and chambered for the .50-70 cartridge after the war for impending use in the Indian wars. It has the standard markings and features, including a faint cartouche and three-groove rifling.

ConditionFine with the barrel and most of the receiver a smooth grey patina. There is a light speckling of oxidation on the buttplate. The refinished wood has numerous minor dings, dents, and scratches, and a moderate chip missing from the comb near the buttplate. Mechanically excellent.
