Cook Signed Factory Exhibition Grade Relief Engraved Gold Inlaid Robbins & Lawrence Pepperbox Pistol

Manufactured on the patent of George Leonard, Junior by Robbins and Laurence. The frame and breech section of the barrel assembly is decorated with relief chiseled scroll designs on the upper flats, floral bouquets in a panel on the side flats and a diamond and dot design with a punch dot background on the lower flats. There is an extraordinary relief engraved eagle on the top rear of the frame. There are two gold inlaid bands on the rear of the breech section. The bands feature delicate scallop and braided designs in them. The barrels are decorated with floral scroll designs with a double scallop border on the muzzle, and punch dot on the breech end and bordering the floral scroll engraving on the upper barrels. The upper sides of the trigger have floral scroll designs, and there are floral designs on the trigger ring. All of the chiseling and engraving on the breech section of the barrels and on the frame have a matte background. The butt is decorated with geometric designs. There is a decorative panel on the upper barrel flutes. The top flute is marked "ROBBINS & LAWRENCE CO", "WINDSOR.VT" on the upper left and "PATENT. 1849." on the lower left. The bottom of the frame directly ahead of the trigger is signed "COOK". It is rare to find a signed engraved firearm from this time period, even work of the likes of Ulrich, Gustave Young and Nimschke were very seldom signed. The barrel assembly latch is floral scroll engraved and has a gold inlaid arrow pointing forward. The fletching and arrow head are very finely detailed. Blade front sight and a notch in the barrel assembly release serves as the rear sight. Ring cocking trigger with outer curved trigger for firing and fitted with smooth grips. These pepperboxes proved to been among the best selling and most popular type of their day and would have sold better if not for the rapid growing proliferation of Colt revolvers.

ConditionFine. The metal surfaces are smooth dark gray in appearance. All of the gold inlay remains. The grips are also fine with a few minor age stress lines and a pleasant mellow patina. The action does not function. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. An exceptionally nice example of a signed factory exhibition grade engraved, gold inlaid pepperbox probably made for someone of high political or social ranking.
