The makers have confirmed that this 20 gauge “Ovundo” shotgun was completed in August 1943 for R. Miesegaes Esq. with patent hand detachable locks, a hinged cover plate, patent one trigger mechanism and 28 inch steel barrels. With blacked barrels and raised concave rib signed "WESTLEY RICHARDS. 23 CONDUIT ST. LONDON GUN MAKERS BY APPOINTMENT TO HIS MAJESTY GEORGE V. REX ET IMP.", marked "OVUNDO" and with silver front bead sight. The flats of the barrels towards the breech engraved "OVUNDO SYSTEM REG.D NO. 354045/1913" on the left and "PAT. 170.703/1920" on the right. The breech end of the upper barrel engraved with a band of foliage and the side bolsters engraved with scroll and strap work. Casehardened scroll engraved action with blued hinged floor plate engraved "WESTLEY RICHARDS/PATENT/OVUNDO", the top of the action engraved "WESTLEY RICHARDS/PATENT ONE TRIGGER", blued top lever, and blued automatic safety with gold inlaid "SAFE". Engine turned locks respectively inlaid with a gold "R" and "L". Casehardened scroll engraved side plates each with hinged inspection cover and signed "WESTLEY RICHARDS". Casehardened trigger plate with blued barrel selector and gold inlaid "O" and "U". Well figured 14 1/4 inch stock including 1 1/8 inch leather covered recoil pad with checkered grip and fore-arm, the last with dark horn cap. The underside of the butt with vacant gold escutcheon. Weight: 5 lbs. 15 oz., Birmingham nitro reproof marks, 65 mm chambers, chokes .011(Mod.) and .020(Imp. Mod.), barrel dimensions: upper proved at 16.0 mm, measuring 16.0 mm, minimum wall thickness 18; lower proved at 16.1 mm, measuring 16.1 mm, minimum wall thickness 22.

Very fine as professionally refurbished. The barrels retain 80% of the thinning blue finish fading to an overall plum color, with some slight scratches. The action and side plates retain 80% of their casehardened finish. The wood is very fine with nice figure, crisp checkering and edges, and only the slightest handling marks. There is some rubbing on the butt and heel of the leather covered pad. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.
