Desirable Korean War Era U.S. Springfield M1C Garand Sniper Rifle with Scarce U.S.M.C. MC-1 Kollmorgen Scope with CMP Certificate

This is a scarce example of a mid-WWII production M1C Garand sniper rifle manufactured circa January 1945. It was rebuilt for the Korean War that is now fitted with a late U.S.M.C. Stitch-Kollmorgen MC-1 Sniper scope and correct Griffin & Howe second pattern MC-1 scope mount. This rifle includes a Certificate of Authenticity from the CMP showing this rifle as being sold in Dec 2003. Typically the CMP certificates show these rifles by their exact model number and serial number; however, in this case it only lists the rifle serial number and model as "Auction", so it was probably sold as a plugged M1C receiver and/or rifle. It is estimated that during WWII approximately 5,000 M1C sniper rifles were built between the end of 1944 and December 1945, with most being overhauled/rebuilt for the Korean War. Following the Korean War, the Marine Corps adopted the larger 4X Stith Kollmorgen MC-1 telescopic sight with the larger Griffin & Howe mount and one-inch rings for use on the M1C sniper rifles. The Marines designated these rifles as the "1952 Sniper Rifle" and issued them in limited numbers from c.1954-1967. Small numbers of 1952 Sniper Rifles were used during the first years of the Vietnam War. Nearly all of the verified USMC 1952 Sniper Rifles are Springfield Armory Korean War rebuilds like this rifle. This rifle has the first contract MC-1 telescopic sight with blue/black mar-proof TUFCOAT finish overall with the tube marked "MC 1182-P" on the top. The rear ocular eye-piece is roll-stamped in two-lines with the commercial markings. The scope is mounted in a second pattern MC-1 mount, which is parkerized and has round end locking levers. The top flat of the mount is roll stamped in military style. The scope has large windage and elevation knobs that produce an audible click when turned and a fine crosshair reticle, and it comes with a set of the scarce original black rubber "Storm Queen" lens covers. The rifle receiver has the standard Springfield Armory receiver markings over serial number "3487761" and "SA-52" on the small flat below the rear sight indicating it was originally converted/overhauled in 1952, and the right receiver leg etched "RRAD/10-65", indicating it was then rebuilt in 1965. The receiver is fitted with a reproduction M1C bracket, that has been renumbered (3487761) on the underside to match the rifle. The bracket (base) is held on by three cap head screws and two incorrect taper pins. It has a mix of parts; the barrel is stamped "SA 6535448 3-63 Y18", the WWII bolt is marked "SA -12", it has a late op-rod marked "6535382 SA", an all SA marked WWII trigger group with a milled trigger guard, a wide base gas cylinder and "M" marked lock. It is also fitted with a standard post-war front and rear sight set. It is fitted with a walnut stock and handguard set with the stock stamped on the left side with a single circle "P" proof in the pistol grip area. It is fitted with a late leather cheek pad that is marked "MRT/11-62". It also comes with a very scarce early WWII pattern all milled flash hider that is marked "SA/HIDER FLASH M 2" on the underside of the bracket. It is complete with a green unmarked web sling with an original USMC issue, Technical Manual on the MC-1 4xD Telescope.

ConditionVery fine, with 98% of the arsenal refurbished parkerized finish, showing only minor edge and high spot wear overall. The MC-1 sniper scope retains 95% plus of its original blue/black factory finish with clear sharp markings and optics, and the corresponding mount also retains 98% of its parkerized finish overall, also with clear sharp markings. The stock and handguards are both in fine condition after being arsenal refurbished with only minor handling marks on the sides in some areas. A nice looking example of a MC-1 USMC type sniper rifle.
