World War II U.S. Springfield Armory M1C Semi-Automatic Sniper Rifle with Matching Serialized Base, Griffin & Howe Mount and Early M81 Telescopic Sight

This is a desirable example of a late WWII M1C Garand sniper rifle that was manufactured by Springfield Armory, circa January 1945, that was later rebuilt for Korea. It is estimated during WWII that approximately 5,000 M1C rifles were produced from late 1944 through December 1945. After WWII, almost all of them overhauled or rebuilt for the Korean War. The receiver has the standard markings over serial number "3683638" with the small flat below the rear sight etched "SA-52", indicating it was rebuilt in 1952. It is fitted with an M1C bracket mounted to the left side of the receiver with three cap head screws and two taper pins. The bracket has been renumbered "3683638" on the underside. It is fitted with an original G&H M1C scope mount with the company name and patent markings on top, numbered "3345086" (non-matching) on the side. The mount is fitted with an early Lyman Alaskan 2.5x M81 Telescopic Sight with standard crosshair reticle, sliding sun-shade and rubber eyepiece. This scope has the rare dual markings of both the standard Lyman Alaskan markings on top followed by serial number "4960", with the early military markings engraved on the left side of the tube, which reads, "TELESCOPE M81/SERIAL NO. 31647/STOCK NO. 84373". As noted, the rifle was rebuilt for Korea, and it is fitted with the following: barrel marked "SA D6535448 2-53 A187" with the breech still in the white. It has a late post-war bolt marked "6528287-SA/US1", op-rod is marked "D35382 SA", a complete late post-war trigger group with a stamped trigger guard, a post-war wide base gas cylinder and "M" marked lock and late post-war rear sight assembly. It is fitted with a nice looking walnut stock and handguard set that is complete with a leather cheekpad marked on the right side with "MRT/1-52". The left side of the stock has a late WWII boxed "SA./NFR" cartouche followed by the cross-cannon ordnance final inspection with a single circle "P" proof in the pistol grip area. The sides of the buttstock are both marked in white paint with a rack number "19". This comes with an unmarked, green web sling, a reproduction Training Manual that coves the M1, M1C and M1D rifles, a rough copy of a letter from David McClain declaring the receiver of this rifle an authentic WWII M1C receiver, and a stamped Hart Manufacturing M2 flash hider.

ConditionVery fine with 90% plus of the arsenal refurbished green parkerized finish overall showing wear on the edges and high spots mixed with a light brown patina. Some finish loss is visible on the right side receiver rail scope bracket and trigger guard. The stock and handguard are fine condition with a nice dark brown color overall, nice clear cartouches on the side, the sides of the stock showing numerous small dings and pressure dents from field use, and some light wear on the handguards. The Lyman scope and mount both retain 75% plus of the original thinning blue with clear, distinct markings and clear optics with the crosshair reticle distinct.
