This is an example of a pre-64 "U.S. PROPERTY" marked Winchester Model 70 target rifle manufactured circa 1955 that has been fitted with a "USMC PROPERTY" marked Unertl sniper rifle scope. The USMC started using the Winchester Model 70 rifles in across the course and international match competition in the late 1940s up through the late 1960s. When we entered Vietnam, they transitioned the Model 70s into a pseudo-sniper role and used it very successfully into the mid-late 1960s until it was replaced/supplemented by the new Remington M40 sniper, which was basically an upgraded model 40X target rifle. These rifles were refitted with the original WWII Unertl sniper scope, that was originally used on the M1903 Springfield NM rifle, which had been held in reserve after WWII and Korea. It has its original Winchester target rifle barrel marked, with the Winchester factory markings and "MODEL 70 30-06 SPFLD". The left side of the receiver is etched "U.S./PROPERTY". The top of the receiver is correctly drilled and tapped for scope blocks and the rear bridge is correctly clip-slotted. The bolt is still in the white with the partial serial number "05077" etched on the underside. The rifle is fitted with the standard Winchester factory target style stock with a checkered steel buttplate. It has the factory target scope blocks on the barrel and receiver, and it is now fitted with an original Unertl sniper scope marked: "J. UNERTL/U.S.M.C.-SNIPER/1406", with 8X on the locking ring of the rear eyepiece. The scope has the standard fine crosshair with micrometer mounts and comes complete with the screw on end caps.
