Description:

This is an excellent example of a very desirable Mauser Model 1896 "Cone Hammer" pistol complete with its original matching combination walnut shoulder stock. This example is fitted with one of the rare Westley Richards type variant rear sights. The rear sight has the early English markings "MAUSER CARTRIDGE/303" with the range markings graduated 100-300. These rare variant rear sights are only found on Cone-Hammer Mauser pistol sold or exported through the British company of Westley Richards. In 1900, the Westley Richards Company became the sole importer/exporter for all Mauser pistols in Great Britain. The pistol is a standard 1896 "Cone Hammer" pattern with the various early features, such as the early long extractor, deep milled panel frame with the raised rear panel on the left side, the dovetailed firing pin retained, early wide trigger, and non-reinforced chamber area. The top of the chamber is marked "WAFFENFABRIK/MAUSER/OBERNDORF A/N". The right side is stamped with a single early Mauser Antlered firing proof, and on the left side it has the standard double "crown/U" firing proof. Standard inverted "v" front sight and the desirable variant rear sight noted above. It has the standard 23-groove walnut grips, with both matching numbered to the pistol. The butt of the pistol still retains its original lanyard ring stud and ring. Complete with its original matching combination walnut shoulder stock/holster. The attaching iron is correctly numbered "4787" on top.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% of its original blue finish overall, edge and high spot wear, and thinning and brown on the grip straps, the sides and lower edges of the magazine well. The top, front area of the barrel shows some darker spots, and there are light scratches on the left rear side of the barrel, probably from being inserted in the stock. The upper rear grip strap shows some heavier deep dings around the disassembly tab. The trigger shows 30% of its straw colors, and the smaller parts show 80% of their heat blued colors overall. The grips are very good overall showing light/minor handling marks and dings on the lower rounded areas. The stock is very good; however, it does show numerous light to moderate scratches and pressure dents on both sides, with slightly heavier ones towards the attaching iron from years of being used and carried in the field. The hinge plate and screws retain 85% of their blue color overall, and the attaching iron retains 20% of its blue finish having turned a gray/brown patina.
