Fine Nickel Plated U.S. Colt Ainsworth Inspected Single Action Army Cavalry Revolver

Manufactured in 1874, the second year of production, this revolver features the standard blade front and notch rear sights. The top of the barrel is marked with the early slant letter "+COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A+." The two-line, two patent date marking is on the left side of the frame followed by "U.S." The bottom of the barrel is marked with a small "P" and "A" just ahead of the cylinder pin. An "A" is on the cylinder, top of the back strap and just below the serial number on the trigger guard. There is a "C" marked on the back of the top strap in the hammer well, and the loading gate is assembly numbered "728". The ejector rod head is the "bulls eye" or donut style with the hole in the center. The matching serial number is marked under the ejector rod on the barrel, (partial "2210"), frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder (partial "2210"). It is fitted with a smooth one piece walnut grip with a boxed "OWA" cartouche on the left side. Orville W. Ainsworth was the first principal sub-inspector assigned to Colt by the War Department. Collectors commonly refer to this variation as an "Indian scout" Colt Cavalry.

ConditionFine. The revolver retains 75% period retailer applied nickel finish. The ejector housing right side of the top strap and cylinder have a mottled gray patina with minor pitting. The lower portion of the back strap has a smooth mottled gray patina. There is wear and flaking on the muzzle, loading gate, recoil shield and trigger guard. The replacement grips have been lightly sanded and varnished with half remaining and show a few scattered minor dents and dings. The cartouche is restamped. The markings are clear and crisp. The action needs adjustment.
