Description:

The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a round barrel in .303 Savage, takedown configuration, English walnut pistol grip stock (stocks were generally fancy American walnut), Victor Grade engraving, and grade "B" checkering when shipped on December 21, 1907, to Barnes & Miller Hardware Co. (unknown address). The factory records also indicate the rifle was returned to the factory for unknown work and returned to Stambaugh Thompson Co., Youngstown, Ohio. The engraving was likely done by Enoch Tue, who worked at Savage from 1901 to 1926. The rifle has German silver blade front, elevation adjustable rear and tang peep sights. The receiver is "engraved with artistic and carefully executed scrollwork" along with big game scenes inside oval panels on both sides. The highly figured stock is fitted with a crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 85% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. The lever has a mixed bright gray patina. The refinished wood is fine with a repaired crack on the forearm, some minor handling evidence and a few blemishes in the recut checkering. There is a scratch through the varnish near the upper tang. Mechanically excellent.
