Description:

The barrel is signed "S * Miller" on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and breech and has a matching patch box design and Roman nose stock profile seen on other known S. Miller rifles. It was built either by Simon Miller or Samuel Miller of Pennsylvania. Most of the rifles with this particular signature have been identified as built by Simon Miller who was active in Hamburg, Berks County, Pennsylvania, from 1775 to 1806, and his rifles are known to have had the Roman nose stock profile seen on this gun. The patch box finial has been seen on other "S * Miller gun" which also feature similar brass furniture. The barrel has rifle style blade and notch sights and a "wedding band" at the transition point. The lock is marked "R./ASHMORE/WARRANTED." The patch box has a simple scroll pattern engraved on the door only, and the stock has a silver thumb plate, silver hunter's star on the cheekpiece, and incised scroll pattern on the left at the butt. It has a ramrod "worm" in the patch box.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted to flintlock configuration with dark brown along the barrel, light brown on the lock, refaced frizzen, mild pitting and oxidation, some tool marks, aged patina on the brass and silver, minor cracks in the stock, some gaps around the lock, attractive flame figure, crisp carving and engraving, and mild scratches and nicks. Mechanically fine.
