Impressive Mid-19th Century American Bowie Knife with North American Catamount Relief Carved Pommel and Scabbard

Bowie knives like this were especially popular in the 1840s-1860s. The blade is 9 1/2 inches long and has a 5 inch clip point, 1 3/4 inch wide blade, and no maker's mark. The blade design is very unusual in that when it approaches the beginning of the clip, it flares up and widens. A similar type can be seen on page 123 of "The Antique Bowie Knife Book" by Adams, Voyles, and Moss identified as owned by Charles Shreiner III and used on the dust jacket of Robert Abels' book "Classic Bowie Knives." That knife is attributed to the earlier Texas days. The hilt has a faceted edge iron cross guard and a blued finish, smooth American rosewood grip with inset silver escutcheons on the outer sides, a brass ferrule at the base, and iron pommel with dual catamount faces (mountain lion/cougar). A similar hilt design, particularly the cross guard, can be seen on the knife on page 48 of "The Bowi Knife" by Norm Flayderman which is noted as a "large, ruggedly made, yet displaying quality craftsmanship. Frontierman's (possibly Confederate) Bowie Knife c. 1840-1860." The overall length is 14 1/8 inches. The scabbard is brass mounted leather with pinned mounted, iron frog button, hand stitching down the back, and white kid leather lining (used on quality edged weapons).

ConditionFine overall with light patina, scratches, some slight spotting, minor blunted tip, polishing marks, and minor edge wear on the blade; aged patina on the brass, faint original niter blue colors on the cross guard mixed with aged brown and gray patina, dark brown patina on the pommel, light scratches and dings on the handle along with some slight hairline cracks, and moderate wear on the otherwise good scabbard. Overall a beautifully executed Bowie showing fine workmanship. We have not seen another one like it!
