Spanish Pattern Cup Hilt Rapier, Marked to Coulaux of Klingenthal

Measuring 40 inches overall, this rapier is fitted with a 33 inch blade, which starts with a lozenge cross-section before transitioning into diamond, with deep double fullers and a tapered rectangular ricasso. A "star/G" makers stamp is present on each side of the blade, with "Coulaux/& C" and "Klingenthal" etched on the left and right sides, respectively, immediately above the cup guard. The exact time of manufacture is unknown, though the firm of Coulaux & Company (contracted operators and later owners of the French military blade establishment at Klingenthal) was active in the sword trade starting in the late 1700s; the Coulaux name is chiefly seen on their private sale items. The cup guard is unadorned, with a rolled edge and a riveted set of support arms, atop an 8 inch rectangular cross guard, wire wrapped grip and octagonal pommel.

ConditionVery good, with some light spotting and handling marks overall. Some play is present in the pommel, otherwise the fit is good and the blade is straight.
