Exceptional Goddess of the Hunt and Patron Saint of Hunters Panel Scene Engraved and Relief Carved Buchel Stecherspanner Schuetzen Rifle

The right side of the action features a rendition of the vision/conversion of St. Hubertus (the patron saint of hunters), and the left side has scene that appears to be a version of the story of Actaeon and Artemis/Diana (goddess of the hunt). Actaeon was turned into a stag according to the predominant version of the myth for seeing her and her attendant nymphs bathing and ultimately had him consumed by his own hunting dogs shortly after he saw his reflection in a pond and realized fate. Note the dog to Artemis's right. The scenes are accented by black leaf engraving that even extends to the top of the breechblock. All of the engraving is exceptionally detailed. The barrel has a post front sight with winged and ramped base, "H. HAVEKER , CUXHAVEN." marked on top, German proofs on the bottom, and a flared section for rear sight mounting. Receiver bridge is inlaid with "SYSTEM BUCHEL/D.R.G.M." in silver. The action also has a integral base for the included diopter rear sight. The forearm and Tyrolean buttstock have traditional German relief carving with textured backgrounds and a detailed scene on the left side of a rifleman waving his Tyrolean cap in celebration of the two bullseyes he just scored in the background with a similar rifle to this one in his right hand and a keg of beer waiting on his left. Includes some articles and documents relating to traditional German schuetzen rifles.

ConditionFine overall with crisp engraving and markings, 70% original blue finish on the barrel, vibrant original case colors on the front sight, more subtle original case colors elsewhere, mostly bright breechblock, gray patina on the balance, some patches of heavy pitting confined under the forearm, minor spotting elsewhere, slight dings and scratches on the wood and metal, a few dents at the edges of the large cheekpiece, slight gap at the junction with the receiver on the left, slight chips on the rear corners of the forearm, and crisp carving. This rifle is a testament to the skill of traditional German gunmakers, engravers, and woodworkers.
