Description:

Scarce Z-Prefix Remington Model 1903A4 sniper rifle manufactured circa January 1944. The "Z-Prefix" denotes a duplicate serial number; these rifles are found in the early 4,000,000 serial number range. Remington produced a total of 2,859 Z-prefixed rifles. This rifle has a Benica Arsenal "B.A./C.A.B." rebuild mark stamped over the "RA, Ordnance Escutcheon, FJA" final inspection marks but appears to be in original condition. The rebuild marks merely indicate the rifle was inspected at Benica but did not require overhaul. The rifle has the distinctive M1903A4 features which include: (1) special "U.S./REMINGTON/MODEL 03-A3 markings ''rolled'' to the left side of the receiver to be visible with the telescopic sight mount in place, (2) receiver with standard rear sight removed, (3) special bolt with handle milled to clear the telescopic sight, (4) barrel with front sight dovetail but no front sight, (5) pistol grip "C" stock with bolt clearance cut, (6) parkerized Redfield Junior telescopic sight mount and (7) Weaver 330-M8 2.5X telescopic sight with blued rings. This rifle has the standard Remington stamped buttplate, sling swivels, trigger guard, lower barrel band, upper barrel band and forearm. All of these components are stamped with the small Remington "R" or, in the case of the trigger guard and buttplate, have the distinctive Remington configuration. The bolt components and magazine cut-off all have the proper "R" mark. The top of the barrel is stamped: "RA/Ordnance 'Shell & Flame'/9-43" behind the front sight dovetail. The stock has the previously mentioned final inspection marks and Benica Arsenal marks on the left wrist with a single circled "P" proof mark on the inside of the pistol grip behind the trigger guard. A "W" manufacturers marks is stamped immediately behind the trigger guard and five Remington inspection marks are stamped on the bottom of the stock ahead of the trigger guard. The right side of the telescopic sight is roll-stamped: "330 SCOPE- M.8" above the three-line "W.R. WEAVER CO." address and patent markings. The scope has a tapered post reticle, click-adjustable windage and elevation knobs and unmarked adjustment knob plate. The telescopic sight is fitted with the correct WWII russet leather lens cover. The barrel, receiver and Redfield mount are parkerized. All of the other components, including the telescopic sight and sight rings are blued. None of the components have been refinished and all the components have the correct blue or parkerized finish found on original rifles. The stock has the original oil finish with crisp markings.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. Although stamped with Benica Arsenal rebuild marks, the balance of the rifle is original and retains 80% of the original blue and parkerized finish. The rifle shows light-moderate handling wear. The stock is excellent overall with scattered minor handling and storage marks. The telescopic sight and rings have 90% of the original blue finish and the optics are clear. This is a very fine, original example of a scarce Z-prefix Remington Model 1903A4 sniper rifle.
