Rare World War II Singer M1911A1 Semi-Automatic Pistol with World War II Historical Documentation

This is a rare example of one of the 500 Model 1911A1 Pistols that was manufactured by the Singer Manufacturing Company during WWII and is accompanied by a notarized statement from the Grandson of the reported WWII solider. Also included is a plethora of service records for the actual veteran. Under the U.S. Army, Ordnance Educational Order No. W-ORD-396, there were a total of only 500 pistols produced by the Singer Manufacturing Company. Theoretically, almost all were issued to the U.S. Army Air Corps. With the extremely low number actually produced, examples are very scarce in any condition. Based on the documentation noted above this pistol was originally issued to Paul M. Ellis during his tour in WWII and remained with him until his death in 1976 where it passed to his son and eventually to his grandson. His service records indicate that he originally entered the Army in January 1942 as an enlisted man, applied for Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Oct 1942 and was accepted. He completed his OCS training in January 1943, was commissioned as a second lieutenant, in Feb 1943 and assigned as a Platoon Leader in the 11th Armored Div, 41st Armored Regiment, Co. D, 1st Tank Bn. They were sent to North Africa and eventually into Italy where he took part in the battle/liberation of Naples, FOGGIA, Rome, (ARNO) and North Appenies. In June 1944, he did receive combat wounds (shrapnel) to the shoulder and back. He was placed in the Reserves in Sept 1945 and reapplied for reappointment into the regular Army in 1946 but was denied. During his service time he received a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf cluster and the European, North African and Middle Eastern Campaign medals with 3 Bronze Stars. The slide is correctly in two-lines "S. MFG.CO./ELIZABETH, N.J., U.S.A.", and no markings on the right side. The top of the slide and left side of the frame are correctly stamped with a single "P" proof mark. The left side of the frame is stamped with the "JKC" initials of Col. John K. Clement, the Executive Officer of the New York Ordnance District. The right side of the frame is stamped in two-lines "UNITED STATES PROPERTY/M 1911 A1 U.S.ARMY" with the serial number "No S800152" below that. The pistol has the wide spur hammer with borderless checkering, a checkered thumb safety, slide stop and trigger face with a replacement serrated mainspring housing. It has a set of WWII Keyes Fibre marked replacement grips without reinforcing rings around the grip screws with a "3" mold mark and internal reinforcing ribs on the back sides of each grip panel. It is fitted with a replacement High Standard all blued barrel with a single "P" proof on the left side of the lug and "HS" on the right side. It comes with a replacement Colt half-tone blued magazine with the double pinned base with the floor plate pins ground smooth on the sides, with no other markings. The feed ramp retains its aged dark brown color never having been altered or repolished. For a true .45 Auto collector, any Singer Model 1911A1 is the holy grail of all WWII pistols.

ConditionVery good plus with 30% of the original blued finish overall with balance being a gray/brown patina mix. The grips panels are in very good condition with nice visible checkering, handling marks and light pressure dents on the sides that appear to have been on the pistol for a long time. The front grip strap has 17 non-factory prick-punch marks which the consignor (grandson) attributes to enemy soldiers killed during the war. A solid representative example of an identified wartime used U.S. Singer contract M1911A1 semi-automatic pistol.
