Exceptional U.S. Winchester M1D Semi-Automatic Sniper Rifle with M84 Scope

This is an original U.S. M1D sniper rifle that was sold by the CMP in the early 1999/2000 lottery drawing after having been rebuilt/upgraded to the M1D configuration. This rifle was rebuilt using an early Winchester M1 rifle receiver that has remained in its original packaging having never been reissued. To ascertain the actual serial number and markings of the rifle a small opening was cut into the original foil wrapping to view the serial number and receiver markings. The back of the foil has been carefully cut to be able to remove the rifle, which is still wrapped. The serial number on the receiver places the original Winchester rifle manufacture in March/April 1941, however based on the type and color of the parkerizing viewed through the opening, it was probably rebuilt/upgraded in the late 1960s by one of the three Army locations, Red River Army Depot, Letterkenny Army Depot, or Springfield Armory. It was later reinspected prior to being sold by the CMP, as the outside foil packaging is dated "A-3/88". Rifles so converted were used as sniper weapons during Korea and the Vietnam War with the standard M1 rifle that was used and or rebuilt/upgraded were almost always manufactured by Springfield Armory. Any Winchester receiver that was used should be considered very scarce/rare as Springfield intended to only use their own manufactured receiver due to their known manufacturing practices and heat treatment. This rifle comes with the majority of its various accessories to include an original M84 sniper scope (SN47941) and mount, a complete cleaning rod assembly with handle, bore brush and swap holder with case, web rifle sling, leather cheekpiece, oiler, scope case and rubber eyepiece, all still contained in their original unopened arsenal packages, as well as an unwrapped Hart M2 flash hider. Since the entire rifle is still contained in its original packaging we cannot give a full accounting of the various part markings, however in keeping with Springfield Armory standards usually all the various parts that were used when these were refurbished and upgraded were a mix of WWII and post war Springfield Armory manufacture with a 1952 or 1953 barrel date. Usually these were also fitted with new, late configuration rear sight assembly and wide base gas system. These were all usually fitted with some refurbished WWII stock and handguard and also some new production birch stock and handguard sets and with a mix of both all walnut and/or birch components. The rifle includes the original CMP shipping box and the original labels still attached.

ConditionVery fine with 99% of the arsenal refurbished dark gray parkerized finish overall. The wood components are all still in their original arsenal refurbished condition with their original, but dry linseed oil finish that may show arsenal refurbishment marks. Certainly the buttstock should show an arsenal rebuild cartouche on the left side. The scope and mount as noted are also still sealed in their original packaging so they are probably in excellent condition. As noted all the various components (minus the flash hider) are still packaged. A real time capsule for the M1 rifle or sniper collector.
