Description:

These were actually manufactured in the late 1930s as a streamlined version of the original WWI Model 1917 rifle, that was designed to compete against the Winchester Model 70 rifle. There were only approximately 2,500 manufactured in total, with almost all of them obtained by the U.S. Government in 1942 as war expedient rifles. They were retained after WWII and eventually disposed of by giving them to the Navy. They sat in U.S. Navy storage for over 25 years then in the late 1960s/early 1970s the Navy decided to use them as presentation trophy rifles for the top rifle and pistol shooters in both the Navy and USMC. This rifle was actually awarded in 1972 to the "All Navy Pistol Champion" and is so marked on the floor plate of the trigger guard, with "SECRETARY OF THE NAVY TROPHY/ALL-NAVY PISTOL CHAMPION 1972". The rifle has a 22 inch sporting weight barrel with a ramp front base and a buckhorn type adjustable rear sight. The barrel is marked with the two-line Remington factory address and with "SPRINGFIELD/30 CAL.1906" on the left side in front of the receiver. The right side of the receiver is marked with "REMINGTON/REG. U.S. Pat. Off." and "MODEL-720/42467" on the left side. It is fitted with its original Remington matching factory bolt correctly stamped on the underside with serial number "42467". It is fitted with an American walnut stock with hand cut checkered panels on the sides of the pistol grip and forend, with factory sling swivels and a checkered steel buttplate. The left side of the stock is correctly stamped with a faint "Cross-Cannon" Ordnance cartouche/an unboxed "FJA" inspector's proof. This rifle does not include any shipping box or Navy release paperwork, although there is considerable historical information on these rifles so it might be fairly easy to find out who the actual shooter was.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 85% plus of the blue finish overall showing minor edge and high spot wear with some minor oxidation/light pitting on the upper exposed section of the barrel with some light rust starting on the barrel band of the front sight. Additionally there is a small, single, unthreaded hole in the rear receiver bridge. The stock is very good with a light honey color overall that has been lightly sanded and reoiled. The checkered panels remain unsanded and still show fine/distinct checkering overall. There is a 3 inch crack on the lower toe area of the buttstock that is visible on both sides.
