Description:

Volcanic lever action carbine manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. c. 1857 with 21-inch barrel and integral 25-shot magazine. Carbines with 21-inch barrels are rare; collectors estimate fewer than one hundred carbines with 21-inch barrels were manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. This carbine has a Type II, half-rib barrel with nickel-silver, half moon front sight. An adjustable rear sight with elevation wheel is mounted in a dovetail on the carbine receiver. The carbine has a blued barrel/magazine, casehardened hammer, trigger and lever and silver-plated receiver and crescent buttplate. The rear sight and springs are niter blue. The top and sides of the receiver, including the upper tang, and the buttplate heel are factory engraved with the standard New Haven Arms Co. factory engraving consisting of open scrollwork with dash borders. The stock is straight grain American walnut with a varnish finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "PATENT" and "FEB 14, 1854". This modified legend was introduced in April 1857 after Oliver Winchester took control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. and re-organized it as the New Haven Arms Co. The serial number, "63", is stamped on the left side of the lower receiver tang beneath the stock, on the inside of the buttplate and on the shanks of the hand-fitted tang and buttplate screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. The numeral "1" is stamped on the lower tang ahead of the rear tang screw and on the top barrel flat immediately ahead of the receiver. The New Haven Arms Co. manufactured an estimated total of 1,000 Volcanic carbines between 1857 and 1860.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 40% of the faded original blue finish is present on the barrel/magazine. The barrel markings are clear. 85% of the original silver-plating on the receiver and buttplate remains with the balance a smooth silver-gray patina. The hammer and trigger retain about 40% of the muted original case colors. Nearly all of the original fire blue finish remains on the rear sight. The simple, but well-executed, factory engraving is crisp. The refinished walnut stock is in fine condition and retains at least 90% of the varnish finish. Wear is limited to some finish flaking along the rear edge of the stock at the junction with the buttplate and a few very insignificant handling or storage marks. This is a fine example of a factory engraved New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic carbine with the seldom encountered 21-inch barrel.
