Rare Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall Baby Saddle Ring Carbine, Class III/NFA Short Barreled Rifle, with Factory Letter and ATF Documents

The included letter from T.E. Hall of the Winchester Gun Museum to well-known collector Larry Jones in 1969 indicates this carbine was listed as a Baby Carbine with Lyman front and rear sights and was shipped on August 30, 1905. The barrel length, caliber, and other attributes were not listed. Approximately 250 "Baby Carbines" are believed to have been manufactured. They were the lightest in weight and shortest variation of the Model 1885. This carbine was registered with the BATFE as a short barreled rifle (transferable Cass III) and has not been exempted as a curio or relic. It has a 15 inch barrel equipped with a pinned and beaded Lyman blade front sight, the two-line address and patent marking on top, the oval "WP" proof ahead of the rear sight which has two folding leaves, and "44 W.C.F." on top at the breech. The low wall action has a tang mounted Lyman peep sight, "17" on the bottom at the front, a saddle ring on the left, and the serial number on the lower tang. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and carbine style stock.

ConditionFine with 40% original blue finish, some subtle original case colors, smooth gray and brown patina on the balance, some small spots of slight pitting and oxidation, and mild overall wear. The forearm is also fine and has mild handling and storage marks. The buttstock is very good and has some hairline cracks in the wrist, some small dings and flakes, and minor overall wear. Mechanically fine. NOTE: This weapon is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) under the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478.
