Martially Inspected U.S. Starr Arms Model 1858 Civil War Double Action Army Revolver

This is a nice example of a Civil War Model 1858 double-action revolver manufactured under government contract by the Starr Arms Co. of New York between January 1862 and May 1863. The revolver has a six-shot cylinder, solid frame, and one piece oil-finished walnut grip. The barrel, frame, cylinder and trigger guard have a high polish blue finish. The loading lever and short spur hammer are casehardened. A blade front sight is mortised on the barrel, and the rear sight is a shallow notch in the hammer lip. The right side of the frame is marked "STARR'S PATENT JAN.15, 1856", and the left side is marked "STARR ARM'S CO., NEW YORK". The serial number is stamped on the front of the frame, the inside of the hammer well and on the cylinder. Single-letter ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most major components. Two script Ordnance inspection marks are stamped on the right side of the grip (upper and lower), and a single script inspection mark is stamped on the lower left side.

ConditionVery fine. The revolver retains 70% plus of the original high polished blue finish with scattered flaking. The exposed areas have a smooth brown patina with a couple of small areas of spotting on the right side of the barrel. The loading lever retains much of the original case colors with the balance having a smooth silver gray patina. The hammer shows bright original case colors on the left side, some oxidation on the striking end and a dark patina on the balance. The grips are also very fine with a few minor dings and dents and crisp and clear cartouches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
