U.S. Contract Whitney Second Model Navy Percussion Revolver

The Whitney Navy revolvers were manufactured in two models and ten different variations in the 1850s and 1860s. Around half of all the Second Model revolvers were purchased by the U.S. Army and Navy as well as various states for use in the Civil War. This transitional example has the cylinder roll scene of the Second Model 4th Type and the "E. WHITNEY/N. HAVEN" barrel marking of the 3rd Type, and its serial number is close to the approximate transition point between these models (15000). It also features a post type front sight, Colt style loading lever latch, inspection marks throughout, a cartouche on the left grip, and the matching serial number on the bottom of the barrel and loading lever (latter twice), back of the grips and cylinder, on the frame under the trigger guard, and on the inside of the trigger guard. A "5" is on the right side of the front strap. "C.A. LeClare" has been hand inscribed on the butt.

ConditionVery good with strong traces of original blue mixed with brown patina, aged patina on the trigger guard, some light oxidation, minor chips at the heel and toe of the grips, faint cartouche on the lightly sanded, reoiled grip, generally crisp other markings, and mild to moderate overall wear expected of a Civil War revolver. Mechanically fine.
