Very Fine Presentation Grade Schuyler, Hartley & Graham/W. Clauberg Staff & Field Style Sword with Inscribed Scabbard

Measuring 41 inches with a 35 inch etched double fuller blade, this sword was marketed by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York City, with a Solingen-produced W. Clauberg blade installed in a fine set of furniture, which was either produced in-house by SH&G or sourced to another New York firm. Swords in this style, which loosely follows the regulation American "Staff & Field" pattern but with significantly higher embellishment, were very popular with regular Army, Volunteer, and militia officers of the appropriate ranks, both as private purchases by officers of wealth and means, and as collective purchases by military units for presentation to particularly well-liked officers. This example, inscribed "LIEUt. WOODHULL/Presented by the/COMPANY" on the scabbard between the bands, appears to be the latter style. Unfortunately, the full name and particulars of Lieutenant Woodhull are lost to time, and records from the Civil War in particular show more than one Lieutenant by that surname, though presumably he was a skilled officer, and able to make a very good impression on his men. The blade bears the etched SH&G mark on the right ricasso and the stamped Clauberg mark on the left, with a panel of patriotic etching about halfway up the blade and "IRON PROOF" on the spine. The guard and pommel are finely sculpted and gilt finished, with fine three-dimensional scrolls among the guard branches, a laurel wreath around the pommel cap, and a cast silver grip with alternating smooth and scalloped ribs. The scabbard is nickel finished overall with sculpted and engraved brass fittings, the aforementioned inscription and a pair of twisted wire suspension rings. The upper suspension band is adorned with a standing Liberty, and the mid-band featuring a soldier with a sword in hand.

ConditionFine. The blade retains about half of the original bright finish, with a mixed antique gray patina on the remainder and clear etching and markings. The hilt retains over 70% of the original gilt finish, with a well aged patina on the visible brass, and the grip is bright along the high points and an antique black in the lower areas. The scabbard shows a golden tint to the nickel, along with a fine patina on the brass and some light dents and scratches.
