Scarce Remington No. 1 Rolling Block Long Range Creedmoor Rifle

Only a small number of these rifles were manufactured c. 1874-1890. They were meant for long range target shooting at the Creedmoor range on Long Island. The American team beat the Irish team in the famous first match at Creedmoor using in part Remington rifles, and L.L. Hepburn, Remington's mechanical department superintendent, was one of the American team members. This one has the "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION, N.Y." barrel address suggesting it was manufactured pre-1888. It also features a wind gauge globe front sight, "44 S" and the matching serial number on the bottom of the barrel along with "L.L. HEPBURN" three times and three lines, a smooth forearm with iron cap and the matching serial number on the tail, the patent markings on the left side of the frame, a long range Vernier peep sight on the upper tang, and a checkered semi-pistol grip buttstock with a horn grip insert and steel shotgun style buttplate.

ConditionVery fine. The refinished barrel retains 95% plus bright blue finish. The breech, hammer, and trigger retain nearly all of their fire blue finish, and the peep sight retains 75% of its nitre blue finish. The original case colors are faded on the forearm cap and buttplate but remain 80% complete and vibrant on the frame. There is some minimal discoloration, light scratches, and edge wear. The wood is also very fine and has smooth oiled finish, crisp checkering, and minor handling and storage type dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
