Scarce and Desirable Factory Engraved Sharps Single Shot Percussion Pistol Rifle

According to Sharps expert Frank Sellers, only 550 of these rifles were manufactured in 1857 to 1860. The first 50 were experimental. They are essentially the same as the Sharps falling block percussion pistols but have modified actions, rifle length barrels, forearms, and stocks. The receiver has a floral scroll engraving and is marked with the three-line address on the left side and three-line patent dates marking on the right side. The hammer, buttplate tang and forend cap are also scroll engraved. The upper tang has the serial number. The lever, forearm and forend cap are numbered to the gun. The barrel is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and an adjustable notch rear sight. Mounted on highly figured walnut forearm and pistol grip stock. The right side of the buttstock has a floral scroll and stag scene engraved patch box. Little is actually known about these pistol rifles, but they are very hard to find, especially in decent condition. Several were modified to pistols, and many others were undoubtedly destroyed.

ConditionVery fine. The barrel retains 85% plus original blue finish. The receiver retains 85% original high polished blue finish with thinning on the balance. The wood is fine with a crack in the right top tang area with dings and scratches throughout and a slight gap visible at frame junction. Most of the original varnish remains. Mechanically excellent. Factory engraved Sharps Pistol Rifles are rarely, if ever, encountered. This specimen makes for a worthy addition to any Sharps collection.
