Description:

This rifle is featured on the cover of Arms Heritage Magazine from February 2013 and discussed in the article "North & Savage Longarms" contained within and also pictured and discussed on page 114 of "American Percussion Revolvers" by Sellers and Smith. It is identified as the patent model and likely the sole example of its type. The gun was designed by Henry S. North and Edward Savage and received patent No. 22,666 on Jan. 18, 1859. Pulling back on the ring lever cocks the hammer and rotate the cylinder. The part octagon barrel has a post type front sight on a dovetailed mount and an ornate band at the transition point, and the brass "gunmetal" frame has a notch and folding ladder rear sight at the front and "E. SAVAGE. MIDDLETOWN. CT/H.S. NORTH PATENTED. JUNE.17TH 1856" on top. The barrel was left unrifled and has pins in the ring and a filled dovetail on the left, and the rear sight likely never fitted with an elevator; these all are logical given that as a patent model it was not meant to actually be fired. The stock has a brass reinforcement plate on each side of the wrist and an iron buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Good with dark textured brown patina on the iron, deep aged patina on the brass, mild marks and scratches, chips and slivers absent from the stock, at the wrist, and moderate storage type wear overall. Mechanically excellent. This is a prize piece for any collector of Savage firearms, revolving rifles, or antique American firearms.
